I raced road bikes semi-competitively for about twelve years — nothing professional, but enough to accumulate strong opinions about geometry, component weight, and the particular misery of a poorly tensioned derailleur at the top of a long climb. When I had kids, those opinions transferred wholesale to the question of children's bikes, which I was mildly horrified to discover were often engineered with even less care than the cheapest adult bikes I'd ever ridden.

Heavy steel cranks on a seven-year-old's first pedal bike. Brakes that require adult hand strength to actuate meaningfully. Wheels that wouldn't hold true through a single proper family ride. I started buying, stripping, and rebuilding children's bikes the way I used to rebuild my race bikes — to understand exactly what I was dealing with and whether it was worth recommending to anyone.

That's how I came to be KiddingZone's most technically-focused reviewer. I care about the same things I always cared about — weight, component quality, drivetrain efficiency, brake modulation — but I've added new dimensions: saddle height range (because a bike that can grow with a child for three years is worth dramatically more than one that fits for one), handlebar reach relative to a child's torso length, and the often-overlooked question of whether a child can actually control the brakes with their hands.

My two, Finn (11) and Lola (8), have been riding since they could walk. Finn is now on a proper 24" trail bike and has very strong feelings about tyre tread patterns. Lola is faster than most adults I know on flat ground and isn't remotely impressed by anything I try to show her. Both of them are better cyclists than I was at their age, which I choose to count as a parenting win.

I coordinate our product testing schedule and handle the more technical end of the reviews — drivetrain and component analysis, weight verification, and anything that involves a torque wrench. If a number appears in a KiddingZone review, I probably verified it myself.
