A bicycle designed to carry passengers or heavy loads. Family cargo bikes have an extended frame with seats or a box at the front or rear. Popular styles include longtail (Yuba, Xtracycle), front-loader (Bakfiets), and e-assisted cargo bikes used for school runs.
A high-strength steel alloy (chromium-molybdenum) used in premium bike frames. Heavier than aluminium but can be drawn into very thin tubes while remaining strong. Used in some premium balance bikes like Strider Pro. Known for a comfortable, slightly springy ride feel.
Despite the name, clipless pedals clip a cleat on the rider's shoe to the pedal, locking the foot in place. Improves pedalling efficiency but requires practice to disengage quickly. Flat pedals are safer and more practical for most children until they are racing or doing long-distance rides.
Consumer Product Safety Commission certification — the minimum US safety standard all bike helmets sold in the United States must meet. CPSC-certified helmets are tested for impact protection and retention system strength. Look for the CPSC sticker inside the helmet. Note: CPSC is a minimum standard; helmets can also carry ASTM, EN 1078, or MIPS ratings.
A braking system using a metal rotor on the wheel hub and a calliper that pinches it to slow the bike. More powerful and consistent in wet conditions than rim brakes. Hydraulic discs self-adjust and require little hand strength — beneficial for children. Increasingly common on kids' mountain bikes from age 7+.
A bicycle with an integrated electric motor that assists pedalling. Kids' e-bikes are designed for older children (10+) and typically limit assist to 15–20 mph and motor power to 250W. Always check local regulations — in many countries, e-bikes above certain power limits require registration.
The white foam inside almost every bike helmet. EPS absorbs impact energy by crushing on impact, which is why helmets must be replaced after any significant crash — the foam compresses permanently even if damage is not visible. EPS can be enhanced with MIPS, WaveCel, or SPIN liners for rotational protection.
A flat, grippy pedal on which the rider's foot rests without mechanical attachment. Recommended for most children — easy to put a foot down quickly, compatible with any shoe, and safer in falls. Look for pedals with pins or textured surfaces that grip the sole.
The component that holds the front wheel and connects it to the frame via the headset. A rigid fork is standard on most kids' bikes. Suspension forks absorb trail bumps but add weight — generally not recommended under 24-inch wheel size as the added weight negates the benefit.
The mechanism inside the rear hub that allows the wheel to spin forward while the pedals are stationary (coasting). It clicks when the rider stops pedalling. Contrast with fixed-gear, where the wheel and pedals always rotate together. Almost all kids' pedal bikes have a freewheel.
A mountain bike with both front suspension fork and rear shock absorber. Smooths out rough trails but adds weight and cost. Generally only appropriate for children 10+ riding technically demanding trails. Hardtail bikes are better value for most young riders.
The set of angles and measurements defining a bike's handling. Key numbers for kids' bikes include reach (how far forward the rider sits), stack (how high the bars sit), and head tube angle (steering responsiveness). Children's bikes should prioritise stability — slacker angles, shorter reach.
A helmet covering the top and sides of the head but leaving the face exposed. The most common cycling helmet style. For children, look for CPSC-certified models with MIPS. Lighter and cooler than full-face designs, suitable for road, trail, and commuting.
A mountain bike with front suspension only — the frame's rear triangle is rigid. Hardtails are lighter, simpler, and cheaper than full-suspension bikes. For most young mountain bikers, a good hardtail teaches better technique than full suspension, as the rider must actively manage rough terrain.
A brake system using fluid (mineral oil or DOT) in sealed lines to transmit force from lever to calliper, rather than a cable. Self-adjusting as pads wear, requiring minimal hand effort and performing consistently in all weather. Standard on quality kids' mountain bikes from 24-inch wheels.
The distance from the floor to the child's crotch, measured barefoot with legs slightly apart. The single most reliable measurement for choosing bike size. The inseam should comfortably exceed the bike's minimum seat height, allowing the child to touch the ground flat-footed at the saddle's lowest position.
The most important factor in a quality kids' bike — weight relative to the rider's body weight. A bike should ideally weigh no more than 30–40% of the child's body weight. Heavy bikes are harder to control and stop, causing frustration and slowing skill development. Premium brands (woom, Prevelo, Guardian) achieve light weight through quality alloy frames and components.
A bicycle designed for off-road riding on trails, dirt, and rough terrain. Characterised by knobby tyres, suspension forks, flat bars, and wide-range gearing. Kids' mountain bikes start at 20-inch wheels (age 6–7) and should have age-appropriate geometry, not simply adult bikes scaled down.
A curved shield mounted over one or both wheels to deflect mud and water spraying off the tyres. Essential for commuting in wet climates. Rear mudguards prevent the classic wet stripe up the rider's back. Clip-on mudguards can be added to most bikes without them as standard.
The outer circular part of a wheel that the tyre mounts onto. Double-wall rims (two layers of aluminium) are significantly stronger than single-wall, important for children who drop kerbs and ride off-road. Rim width must match tyre width — wider internal rims support wider tyres better.
A braking system where rubber pads press against the wheel rim sidewall. Simple, light, and easy to adjust at home. Less effective in wet or muddy conditions. Most kids' bikes under 20 inches use V-brakes (linear-pull rim brakes) as a reliable, affordable option.
The friction force a tyre generates rolling over a surface, which the rider must overcome. Affected by tyre width, tread pattern, pressure, and compound. Heavy, knobby tyres on cheap kids' bikes create high rolling resistance. A quality tyre upgrade is often the most cost-effective improvement to a mid-range bike.
The seat the rider sits on. Kids' saddles should be comfortable but not overly cushioned — thick gel saddles can cause chafing on longer rides. Width matters: the saddle should support the child's sit bones. Saddle height is critical — hips should not rock excessively when pedalling.
The distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. Correct seat height allows a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Too low causes inefficient pedalling and knee pain; too high risks losing balance. The seat height range a bike offers determines how many years it will fit the child.
The mechanism on the handlebar that moves the derailleur to change gears. Trigger shifters (thumb-operated) are easiest for children. Twist shifters (grip-shift) require less precise movement but take more practice. Shimano Altus and Acera groupsets offer reliable shifting for kids' bikes at a reasonable price.
The distance from the ground to the top tube of the frame at its highest point. The rider must be able to stand astride the bike with both feet flat on the ground and clearance above the top tube. Standard recommendation: 1–2 inches clearance for road bikes, 2–4 inches for mountain bikes.
A fork with a built-in spring and damping mechanism that absorbs front-wheel bumps. Reduces fatigue and improves grip on rough terrain. On kids' bikes, cheap suspension forks add significant weight and often pogo rather than absorb properly. Only worthwhile from 24-inch wheels on quality bikes.
A half-bike that attaches to an adult bicycle, letting a child sit behind the adult and pedal along. The adult steers; the child contributes pedal power. Suitable for children aged 3–9 who are too small for long independent rides but old enough to pedal. Popular for family touring and the school run.
A wheel attachment system where a bolt passes entirely through the hub and threads into both sides of the fork or frame. More rigid and precise than a quick-release skewer, improving handling and brake rotor alignment. Beginning to appear on premium kids' mountain bikes from 24-inch wheels upwards.
A wheel and tyre system eliminating the inner tube, using a sealed rim, compatible tyre, and liquid sealant. Benefits include lower puncture risk (sealant seals small holes instantly), lower rolling resistance, and the ability to run lower pressures without pinch flats. Increasingly available on kids' mountain bikes from age 8+.
How wide a tyre is when inflated, measured in millimetres (road) or inches (mountain/hybrid). Wider tyres provide more grip and comfort but add rolling resistance. Kids' bikes typically use 1.75–2.4-inch tyres. A common mistake is fitting tyres that are too narrow, reducing confidence on anything other than smooth tarmac.
The most common brake on kids' bikes under 20 inches. Two brake arms mount on the fork or seatstay, pulling inward against the rim when the lever is pulled. V-brakes are simple, powerful, and easy to adjust at home. Less effective in muddy or wet conditions than disc brakes but perfectly adequate for most children's riding.
A proprietary helmet liner technology by Trek/Bontrager using a cellular lattice material instead of solid foam. The cells flex, crumple, and glide to absorb and redirect impact energy, claimed to protect against both direct and rotational impacts. Available in some Bontrager children's helmets as an alternative to MIPS.
The distance between the front and rear wheel axles. A longer wheelbase creates a more stable, planted bike that tracks straight. A shorter wheelbase is more manoeuvrable. Kids' bikes should favour longer wheelbases for confidence and stability, particularly balance bikes where the child pushes off the ground.
A mountain biking discipline focused on covering distance across varied terrain — climbs, descents, and flat sections. The most accessible form of off-road cycling for children. XC-oriented kids' bikes balance climbing efficiency with trail capability. Major junior XC races exist from age 7 onwards.
