Every term you will encounter when buying bikes, helmets, and gear for your child — explained in plain English.

A

Alloy

Also known as: Aluminium alloy

Aluminium alloy (usually 6061 or 7005 grade) is the most common kids' bike frame material. Lightweight, rust-proof, and stiff, it transfers pedalling energy efficiently. A well-designed alloy frame typically weighs 20–30% less than a comparable steel frame — important for children who must be able to pick their bike up.

Axle

The rod that runs through a wheel hub, allowing the wheel to spin freely while being fixed to the fork or frame. Most kids' bikes use a nutted axle (needs a spanner) or a quick-release (lever-operated). Thru-axles are rare on children's bikes.

B

Balance Bike

A two-wheeled bike with no pedals or drivetrain. Kids propel themselves with their feet, learning balance and steering before transitioning to a pedal bike. The most effective way to teach children to ride.

BMX

Also known as: Bicycle Motocross

A style of bike designed for racing on dirt tracks or performing tricks. BMX bikes have small 20-inch wheels, a single gear, a low frame, and no front brake on trick bikes. Kids' BMX bikes are typically 16- or 18-inch wheeled versions, ideal for ages 5–10.

Bottom Bracket

Also known as: BB

The bearing assembly in the frame where the crank arms attach. Converts the rotational force of pedalling into forward motion. Poor-quality bottom brackets are a common weak point in cheap kids bikes.

Brake Lever

The lever on the handlebar that the rider squeezes to activate the brakes. On quality kids' bikes, brake levers are sized for small hands and the distance from bar to lever is adjustable so young riders with short fingers can reach them comfortably.

Bunny Hop

A technique where the rider lifts both wheels off the ground simultaneously to clear an obstacle without losing momentum. Learned on a balance bike, refined on a pedal bike. One of the most useful off-road skills a child can develop.

C

Cadence

The number of pedal revolutions per minute (RPM). A smooth, efficient cadence is typically 60–90 RPM. Teaching children to pedal in a higher cadence (spinning) rather than mashing a big gear builds better technique and reduces knee strain.

Cargo Bike

Also known as: Family bike

A bicycle designed to carry passengers or heavy loads. Family cargo bikes have an extended frame with seats or a box at the front or rear. Popular styles include longtail (Yuba, Xtracycle), front-loader (Bakfiets), and e-assisted cargo bikes used for school runs.

Cassette

Also known as: Sprocket cluster

The cluster of cogs on the rear wheel hub. The chain moves between cassette cogs when the rider shifts gears. Kids' bikes need cassettes with large low-end cogs for easy climbing. Measured in number of cogs (e.g. 8-speed) and tooth range (e.g. 11–32T).

Chain Guard

Also known as: Chainguard

A plastic or metal cover that protects the chain and prevents clothing from getting caught. Full chain guards are common on kids bikes and reduce maintenance by keeping the chain clean.

Chainring

Also known as: Front sprocket

The large toothed ring attached to the crank arm that drives the chain. Single-chainring (1x) drivetrains are increasingly common on kids' bikes as they eliminate the front derailleur, reducing weight and complexity.

Chromoly Steel

Also known as: Cro-Mo, 4130 steel

A high-strength steel alloy (chromium-molybdenum) used in premium bike frames. Heavier than aluminium but can be drawn into very thin tubes while remaining strong. Used in some premium balance bikes like Strider Pro. Known for a comfortable, slightly springy ride feel.

Clincher Tyre

The most common tyre type: a separate inner tube sits inside a tyre that hooks (clinches) onto the rim. Easy to repair punctures. Standard on most kids bikes.

Clipless Pedals

Also known as: Clip-in pedals

Despite the name, clipless pedals clip a cleat on the rider's shoe to the pedal, locking the foot in place. Improves pedalling efficiency but requires practice to disengage quickly. Flat pedals are safer and more practical for most children until they are racing or doing long-distance rides.

Coaster Brake

Also known as: Back-pedal brake

A rear brake activated by pedalling backwards. Common on entry-level kids bikes. Does not require hand strength to operate, making it suitable for very young riders — but harder to unlearn when transitioning to hand brakes.

CPSC Certification

Consumer Product Safety Commission certification — the minimum US safety standard all bike helmets sold in the United States must meet. CPSC-certified helmets are tested for impact protection and retention system strength. Look for the CPSC sticker inside the helmet. Note: CPSC is a minimum standard; helmets can also carry ASTM, EN 1078, or MIPS ratings.

Crankset

Also known as: Cranks

The assembly including the crank arms and chainring(s). Converts the rider's leg force into rotational motion. Crank arm length should match the rider's leg length — most kids' bikes use 110–152mm cranks. Oversized cranks cause an inefficient, rocking pedalling style.

D

Derailleur

The mechanism that moves the chain between gears. Front and rear derailleurs work together. On kids bikes, a rear derailleur alone (7–8 speeds) is usually sufficient. Requires periodic adjustment.

Disc Brake

Also known as: Hydraulic disc, Mechanical disc

A braking system using a metal rotor on the wheel hub and a calliper that pinches it to slow the bike. More powerful and consistent in wet conditions than rim brakes. Hydraulic discs self-adjust and require little hand strength — beneficial for children. Increasingly common on kids' mountain bikes from age 7+.

Dropout

The slot in the bike frame or fork where the wheel axle sits. Quick-release dropouts allow tool-free wheel removal; nutted dropouts require a spanner. Important to check when lowering a seat or changing wheels.

E

E-Bike

Also known as: Electric bike, Pedelec

A bicycle with an integrated electric motor that assists pedalling. Kids' e-bikes are designed for older children (10+) and typically limit assist to 15–20 mph and motor power to 250W. Always check local regulations — in many countries, e-bikes above certain power limits require registration.

EPS

Also known as: Expanded Polystyrene

The white foam inside almost every bike helmet. EPS absorbs impact energy by crushing on impact, which is why helmets must be replaced after any significant crash — the foam compresses permanently even if damage is not visible. EPS can be enhanced with MIPS, WaveCel, or SPIN liners for rotational protection.

F

Fat Bike

A bicycle with oversized tyres (3.8–5 inches wide) providing grip and flotation on loose surfaces like sand, snow, or mud. The wide tyres run at very low pressure (5–15 PSI) giving a plush, forgiving ride. Kids' fat bikes are fun on beaches and winter terrain.

Flat Pedal

Also known as: Platform pedal

A flat, grippy pedal on which the rider's foot rests without mechanical attachment. Recommended for most children — easy to put a foot down quickly, compatible with any shoe, and safer in falls. Look for pedals with pins or textured surfaces that grip the sole.

Fork

Also known as: Front fork

The component that holds the front wheel and connects it to the frame via the headset. A rigid fork is standard on most kids' bikes. Suspension forks absorb trail bumps but add weight — generally not recommended under 24-inch wheel size as the added weight negates the benefit.

Frame

The main structural skeleton of the bicycle. On kids' bikes, the most important frame measurement is standover height — the child must be able to straddle the top tube flat-footed. Frame material (alloy, steel, carbon) affects weight, ride quality, and price.

Freewheel

Also known as: Freewheel mechanism

The mechanism inside the rear hub that allows the wheel to spin forward while the pedals are stationary (coasting). It clicks when the rider stops pedalling. Contrast with fixed-gear, where the wheel and pedals always rotate together. Almost all kids' pedal bikes have a freewheel.

Full-Suspension

Also known as: Dual suspension, FS

A mountain bike with both front suspension fork and rear shock absorber. Smooths out rough trails but adds weight and cost. Generally only appropriate for children 10+ riding technically demanding trails. Hardtail bikes are better value for most young riders.

G

Gear Ratio

The mechanical relationship between front chainring and rear cassette cog. A high ratio means the wheel turns many times per pedal revolution (fast, hard to push). A low ratio means fewer turns per revolution (slow, easy to climb). Kids' bikes need a wide range of easy gears for hills.

Geometry

Also known as: Bike geometry

The set of angles and measurements defining a bike's handling. Key numbers for kids' bikes include reach (how far forward the rider sits), stack (how high the bars sit), and head tube angle (steering responsiveness). Children's bikes should prioritise stability — slacker angles, shorter reach.

H

Half-Shell Helmet

Also known as: Road helmet, open-face helmet

A helmet covering the top and sides of the head but leaving the face exposed. The most common cycling helmet style. For children, look for CPSC-certified models with MIPS. Lighter and cooler than full-face designs, suitable for road, trail, and commuting.

Handlebar

Also known as: Bars

The steering bar the rider grips. Kids' bikes use flat bars or riser bars for an upright, comfortable position. Handlebar width should roughly match the child's shoulder width — wider bars give more control on trails but can feel unwieldy in tight spaces.

Hardtail

A mountain bike with front suspension only — the frame's rear triangle is rigid. Hardtails are lighter, simpler, and cheaper than full-suspension bikes. For most young mountain bikers, a good hardtail teaches better technique than full suspension, as the rider must actively manage rough terrain.

Head Tube Angle

The angle of the fork relative to the ground. A slacker (more horizontal) angle gives stability at speed; a steeper angle gives quicker steering. Kids geometry should favour stability over agility.

Hub

The central component of a wheel where the axle passes through and spokes connect. Rear hubs contain the freewheel or cassette body. Hub quality significantly affects how smoothly and quietly a bike rolls. Sealed-bearing hubs last longer and need less maintenance than cup-and-cone designs.

Hydraulic Brake

Also known as: Hydraulic disc, Hydro

A brake system using fluid (mineral oil or DOT) in sealed lines to transmit force from lever to calliper, rather than a cable. Self-adjusting as pads wear, requiring minimal hand effort and performing consistently in all weather. Standard on quality kids' mountain bikes from 24-inch wheels.

I

Inseam Measurement

Also known as: Inside leg length

The distance from the floor to the child's crotch, measured barefoot with legs slightly apart. The single most reliable measurement for choosing bike size. The inseam should comfortably exceed the bike's minimum seat height, allowing the child to touch the ground flat-footed at the saddle's lowest position.

K

Kickstand

A small extendable leg that holds the bike upright when parked. Useful for independence — the child can park their own bike without leaning it against a wall. Many performance bikes omit kickstands to save weight. For everyday school or town use, a kickstand is a practical addition.

L

Lightweight Kids Bike

The most important factor in a quality kids' bike — weight relative to the rider's body weight. A bike should ideally weigh no more than 30–40% of the child's body weight. Heavy bikes are harder to control and stop, causing frustration and slowing skill development. Premium brands (woom, Prevelo, Guardian) achieve light weight through quality alloy frames and components.

M

MIPS

Also known as: Multi-directional Impact Protection System

A low-friction layer inside a helmet that allows the shell to rotate slightly relative to the head during an angled impact. Reduces rotational forces transferred to the brain. Look for it on helmets for older, faster-riding children.

Mountain Bike

Also known as: MTB

A bicycle designed for off-road riding on trails, dirt, and rough terrain. Characterised by knobby tyres, suspension forks, flat bars, and wide-range gearing. Kids' mountain bikes start at 20-inch wheels (age 6–7) and should have age-appropriate geometry, not simply adult bikes scaled down.

Mudguard

Also known as: Fender

A curved shield mounted over one or both wheels to deflect mud and water spraying off the tyres. Essential for commuting in wet climates. Rear mudguards prevent the classic wet stripe up the rider's back. Clip-on mudguards can be added to most bikes without them as standard.

P

Pedal

The platform on which the rider's foot rests to turn the crankset. Kids' bikes should have pedals with enough grip to keep feet in place on bumpy terrain. Plastic pedals are standard; metal pedals with pins offer more grip and durability for older children doing off-road riding.

Pump Track

A circuit of rollers, berms (banked turns), and jumps designed to be ridden without pedalling — using body weight and timing to generate speed ('pumping'). Excellent for developing bike handling, timing, and confidence. Found in many bike parks and skate parks.

Q

Quick Release

Also known as: QR

A lever mechanism that allows the wheel to be removed without tools. Convenient but requires checking the lever is fully closed before riding. Some parents prefer nutted axles for younger children to avoid accidental loosening.

R

Reach

The horizontal distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube. Determines how stretched-out or upright the rider sits. Children benefit from shorter reach — it allows a slight forward lean without overextending the arms or compromising control and confidence.

Reflectors

Passive safety devices that reflect light back toward its source. Required by law in many countries: red at the rear, white at the front, amber on the wheels. Not a substitute for active LED lights when riding in low light. EU standard EN 14765 requires reflectors on all new kids' bikes.

Rim

Also known as: Wheel rim

The outer circular part of a wheel that the tyre mounts onto. Double-wall rims (two layers of aluminium) are significantly stronger than single-wall, important for children who drop kerbs and ride off-road. Rim width must match tyre width — wider internal rims support wider tyres better.

Rim Brake

Also known as: V-brake, caliper brake

A braking system where rubber pads press against the wheel rim sidewall. Simple, light, and easy to adjust at home. Less effective in wet or muddy conditions. Most kids' bikes under 20 inches use V-brakes (linear-pull rim brakes) as a reliable, affordable option.

Road Bike

A bicycle optimised for speed on paved surfaces, with thin tyres, drop handlebars, and a forward-leaning position. Generally not suitable for young children. Kids' road bikes typically start at 24-inch wheels for ages 8+, most commonly used in junior racing.

Rolling Resistance

The friction force a tyre generates rolling over a surface, which the rider must overcome. Affected by tyre width, tread pattern, pressure, and compound. Heavy, knobby tyres on cheap kids' bikes create high rolling resistance. A quality tyre upgrade is often the most cost-effective improvement to a mid-range bike.

S

Saddle

Also known as: Seat

The seat the rider sits on. Kids' saddles should be comfortable but not overly cushioned — thick gel saddles can cause chafing on longer rides. Width matters: the saddle should support the child's sit bones. Saddle height is critical — hips should not rock excessively when pedalling.

Seat Height

Also known as: Saddle height

The distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. Correct seat height allows a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Too low causes inefficient pedalling and knee pain; too high risks losing balance. The seat height range a bike offers determines how many years it will fit the child.

Seatpost

The cylindrical tube that supports the saddle and slides into the frame's seat tube. Adjusting the seatpost changes saddle height. A dropper post (lowered via a remote lever) appears on some kids' mountain bikes — useful for technical descents but adds weight and complexity.

Shifter

Also known as: Gear lever

The mechanism on the handlebar that moves the derailleur to change gears. Trigger shifters (thumb-operated) are easiest for children. Twist shifters (grip-shift) require less precise movement but take more practice. Shimano Altus and Acera groupsets offer reliable shifting for kids' bikes at a reasonable price.

Single-Speed

A bike with one gear ratio — no derailleur or shifters. Simpler, lighter, and lower maintenance. Ideal for young children and flat terrain.

Spoke

One of the thin metal rods connecting the wheel hub to the rim, transmitting forces and maintaining wheel shape. A bike with a broken spoke should not be ridden until the wheel is re-tensioned by a mechanic — riding with a broken spoke bends the rim and causes further damage.

Standover Height

The distance from the ground to the top tube of the frame at its highest point. The rider must be able to stand astride the bike with both feet flat on the ground and clearance above the top tube. Standard recommendation: 1–2 inches clearance for road bikes, 2–4 inches for mountain bikes.

Stem

The component connecting the handlebar to the fork's steerer tube. Stem length determines how far forward the child reaches — shorter stems suit younger or less confident riders by keeping weight more upright. Adjustable-rise stems allow handlebar height to be raised as the child grows.

Suspension Fork

Also known as: Front suspension

A fork with a built-in spring and damping mechanism that absorbs front-wheel bumps. Reduces fatigue and improves grip on rough terrain. On kids' bikes, cheap suspension forks add significant weight and often pogo rather than absorb properly. Only worthwhile from 24-inch wheels on quality bikes.

T

Tag-Along

Also known as: Trailer cycle, Trail-a-bike

A half-bike that attaches to an adult bicycle, letting a child sit behind the adult and pedal along. The adult steers; the child contributes pedal power. Suitable for children aged 3–9 who are too small for long independent rides but old enough to pedal. Popular for family touring and the school run.

Thru-Axle

Also known as: TA

A wheel attachment system where a bolt passes entirely through the hub and threads into both sides of the fork or frame. More rigid and precise than a quick-release skewer, improving handling and brake rotor alignment. Beginning to appear on premium kids' mountain bikes from 24-inch wheels upwards.

Tubeless

Also known as: Tubeless-ready, TLR

A wheel and tyre system eliminating the inner tube, using a sealed rim, compatible tyre, and liquid sealant. Benefits include lower puncture risk (sealant seals small holes instantly), lower rolling resistance, and the ability to run lower pressures without pinch flats. Increasingly available on kids' mountain bikes from age 8+.

Tyre Pressure

Also known as: PSI

The amount of air in a tyre, measured in PSI (pounds per square inch) or Bar. Kids bike tyres typically run 30–60 PSI. Under-inflated tyres increase puncture risk and rolling resistance; over-inflation makes the ride harsh.

Tyre Width

How wide a tyre is when inflated, measured in millimetres (road) or inches (mountain/hybrid). Wider tyres provide more grip and comfort but add rolling resistance. Kids' bikes typically use 1.75–2.4-inch tyres. A common mistake is fitting tyres that are too narrow, reducing confidence on anything other than smooth tarmac.

V

V-Brake

Also known as: Linear-pull brake, direct-pull brake

The most common brake on kids' bikes under 20 inches. Two brake arms mount on the fork or seatstay, pulling inward against the rim when the lever is pulled. V-brakes are simple, powerful, and easy to adjust at home. Less effective in muddy or wet conditions than disc brakes but perfectly adequate for most children's riding.

Visor

Also known as: Helmet peak

A small brim attached to the front of a helmet, standard on mountain bike helmets. Provides shade and deflects trail debris and branches from the eyes. Most children's helmets include a visor. Not standard on road helmets, where riders wear sunglasses instead.

W

WaveCel

A proprietary helmet liner technology by Trek/Bontrager using a cellular lattice material instead of solid foam. The cells flex, crumple, and glide to absorb and redirect impact energy, claimed to protect against both direct and rotational impacts. Available in some Bontrager children's helmets as an alternative to MIPS.

Wheelbase

The distance between the front and rear wheel axles. A longer wheelbase creates a more stable, planted bike that tracks straight. A shorter wheelbase is more manoeuvrable. Kids' bikes should favour longer wheelbases for confidence and stability, particularly balance bikes where the child pushes off the ground.

Wheel Size

Measured in inches for children's bikes. Common sizes: 12" (balance bikes, age 1–3), 14" (age 3–4), 16" (age 4–6), 18" (age 5–7), 20" (age 6–9), 24" (age 8–12), 26" (age 10+). Wheel size alone does not determine fit — seat height range is a more reliable guide.

X

XC

Also known as: Cross-country mountain biking

A mountain biking discipline focused on covering distance across varied terrain — climbs, descents, and flat sections. The most accessible form of off-road cycling for children. XC-oriented kids' bikes balance climbing efficiency with trail capability. Major junior XC races exist from age 7 onwards.
