Bike Storage ideas & Solutions

eric-awwy By Eric Awwy, 13 Jun 2021

There are several innovative ways to safeguard bikes. Every bike owner knows this!

If you’re a bike owner, you also know that there are equally numerous reasons your bike(s) require proper storage.

Firstly, bikes are expensive.

Secondly, bikes are highly susceptible to damage as a result of careless storage. Even the cheapest bike becomes expensive once it’s damaged a few months after purchase due to improper storage and after that requires replacement or repair.

Thirdly, bikes can be space-consuming if haphazardly placed.  No matter how much garage room you have, bikes are just awkward to store without an organizing system. They shrink up the room when placed carelessly on the floors, and they can even end up hurting young ones when they run into them.

As a bike owner, the key question arises; out of the massive options in the market today, which are the best storage solutions for your special machines?

In this article, we suggest and review some of the best bike storage ideas for kids' bikes in apartments, garages, and outdoor.

BUT…. There’s a twist.

We have also gone ahead and grouped the bike storage types so you can automatically choose a storage method based on your most urgent need!

Sounds good?

Read on and choose the best!

Categories of Bike Storage Solutions

Floor Racks

This indoor storage mechanism is usually used in garages, but in some cases, you will find them being used in playrooms and other rooms where space allows.

Floor racks bank on the organization rather than saving on space as they use up quite a substantial amount of floor space.

You will find that because they take up so much room, this type of bike storage is usually reserved for bikes that get used a lot and therefore require the easiest and fastest access.

The best feature about floor racks is that they don’t require mechanical installation. Very few of them require bolting onto the ground for extra support. However, for most of them, you simply pop the rack down and get to using it!

This feature makes them very mobile too. So, it is easy to transport the rack from one location to the next; without a hassle!

Another thing that makes floor racks a great bike storage system is that it is easiest for kids to use independently. Because the bike is planted on the floor rather than hung up, it is easy for them to place and remove their bikes without adult supervision.

However, this storage system is not without its limitations.

The downside of counters is that most floor racks don’t usually fit bikes under 20” while others are simply not disc brake compatible.

  • Gives easy access to bikes
  • Easy for kids to use on their own
  • Requires no installation
  • Utilizes a lot of floor space
  • Most are limited to bikes over 20”

Below are some of the best floor racks for you and your kids’ bikes.

Rack Max No. of Bikes Dimensions (LxWxH) Smallest Wheel Size Max. Tire Width Rack Weight
1. RAD Cycle Six Bike Garage Bike Stand 6 30 x 25 x 30 16 inches 2.5 inches 25 lbs.
2. Simple Houseware 5 Bike Floor Rack 5 70 x 14.75 x 14  16 inches 3.5 inches 1lb.
3. RAD Cycle Mighty Rack 2-Bike Floor Stand 2

11 lbs.
4. CyclingDeal Bicycle Floor Type Parking Rack Stand 3 18.11 x 14.57 x 3.94 12 inches 2.5 inches 10lbs.
5. PLKOW Bike Storage Rack 3 45.28 x 21.46 x 3.54 2.5 inches 21.2 lbs.

8. Delta Cycle Shop Rack Park 1 27 x 7.5 x 4 18 inch Universal 4.9 lbs.

1 RAD Cycle Six Bike Garage Bike Stand

Coming up first in our review is the RAD Cycle Six bike garage bike stand.

This bike rack is parked with all the advantages that you expect from a well-functioning floor rack. From the lack of installation to the easy bike access and the ease of use. However, there are three features of the RAD rack that make it extra special.

The first feature is how many bikes this rack can store. Unlike the regular one-bike rack, this one holds up to six bikes, saving your coins and giving you great value at the same time. Of course, this makes the rack suitable for larger garages where space is not a problem.

The second special feature about the RAD rack is that it allows you to store the bikes facing different directions, three on one side and three on the other. As a bonus, where you don’t have enough room for that, this rack can be used to store a smaller number of bikes.

The last distinguishing factor is that it has helmet hooks. So, not only are you getting proper storage for your bikes but also for the accessories that come along with it

  • Holds six bikes
  • Comes with hooks for bike accessories
  • Allows you to store bikes facing different sides
  • Not best for the smallest bike sizes

2 Simple Houseware 5 Bike Floor Rack

Next up, we’ve got the Simple Houseware 5 bike floor rack.

This indoor bike rack combines user-friendliness, simplicity, and great organization with a very affordable price tag.

Like the RAD cycle rack, we love that it stores many bikes, but we especially love that it fits a wider range of bike wheel sizes compared to other racks. Bikes with wheels sizes as small as 12 inches can fit in this rack!

Note that while it states that it’s a 5-bike rack, 5-adult bikes wouldn’t fit in the rack when placed side to side. The only way to fit the rack fully with adult bikes is to place them opposite each other. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad feature as the rack actually does fit 5-bikes if you use it to alternate between kids’ bikes and adults’ bikes.

We also love the fact that it’s modular, meaning that it can either be shortened or expanded to fit a larger or smaller number of bikes.

Our only reservation about this rack is that it’s made of cheap steel material, making it easy to bend compared to better quality steel. Although great at first, we don’t suppose the rack would be just as strong with long-term use.

Additionally, we found the wheel supports rather tall, making the support for kids’ bikes not as stable as with bigger bikes.

So, what’s the ideal situation for the Simpleware rack? It fits perfectly for families with multiple bikes, plenty of garage space, and a limited budget!.

  • Very affordable
  • Stores bikes as small as 12”
  • Expandable for bigger bike sizes
  • Modular
  • Not very stable with kids’ bikes
  • Not as durable

3 RAD Cycle Mighty Rack 2-Bike Floor Stand

The RAD Cycle Mighty rack is a premium rack, for lack of a better way to describe it.

It’s like a kickstand, but way better! It definitely is much steadier than a kickstand as it allows two bikes to be stored in a more stationary position.

It really doesn’t get any simpler than just rolling the bike onto the rack and walking off, does it? However, with the Mighty Rack, there is no need for lifting the bike or dealing with clamps and brackets.

The simplicity of use is a clear sign that this rack was designed not only with adults in mind but also with the youngest riders. But what is even more relieving is that in spite of how simple the storage mechanism is, it still manages to remain stable.

This is because the solid base of the rack gives the bike unparalleled stability.

Additionally, this two-bike rack is designed such that the bikes can be stored facing similar or alternate directions.

The tubular steel construction and durable finish clearly show that this rack was designed to last for years.

Our only qualm with it is that it doesn’t provide the best protection against theft. On the plus side, it’s great for indoor storage, but we wouldn’t trust it outside.

Nonetheless, if you are looking for a simple, functional yet cost-effective solution, the RAD Mighty Rack floor stand may just be what you need.

  • Heavy-duty steel construction
  • Requires no lifting
  • Very kid-friendly
  • Quick and easy access guaranteed
  • Portable
  • Not disc brake compatible

4 CyclingDeal Bicycle Floor Type Parking Rack Stand (three stands option)

CyclingDeal offers a sweet 3-bike, 5-bike, and 6-bike deal for a family of bikers or individuals with different bikes for every situation.

These high-quality steel racks are one of the most affordable options we have on our list, and each of them offers storage for multiple bikes.

It is an excellent choice for adults with multiple bike types and sizes as it does not have a rigid slot for bike tires. Instead, it can handle any bike tire size and type as long as it is 20 inches and over. Of course, this also has the disadvantage of locking out the smallest riders from use, but for the average adult, this bike rack is an ideal choice.

We also love that the preliminary assembly is not time-consuming. The racks simply sit on the floor and are ready for use upon arrival. You just need to piece together the different sections, and you can set your bikes for storage.

One great feature about this rack is that it also allows you to remove one or more units with the quick release mechanism. So you can save space if you don’t need to store as many bikes at once.

It is also easy to move the rack around as one does not need to anchor it to the ground for use. Granted, the lightweight of each rack makes it super easy to move around.

We are sure that every large family of riders will delight in how these CyclingDeal racks get rid of that tangled heap of bikes off their garage floor!

  • Lightweight
  • Requires no installation
  • Modular
  • Limited to 20” tires and over

5 PLKOW Bike Storage Garage Floor Rack

The PLKOW bike storage rack gives unparalleled support to your bikes. But that’s a tip to the ocean of reasons why this bike rack is a fan favorite!

The sole reason why this rack can be spotted in most garages is that it is the perfect example of a multi-purpose organizer. Not only is it designed to hold and organize bikes from the regular garage traffic, but it also comes with an extra storage rack where all kinds of sports equipment can be stored.

Got baseballs? Basketballs? Rugby balls? Or do you simply not know where to stash your kids’ helmets and gloves after riding hours? Well, this is just the rack for you!

The 4 movable hooks it comes with can be used for helmet storage.

The rack is able to support extra accessories while still holding up to 3 bikes, which is its maximum load capacity. The bikes can be mommy’s, daddy’s, or little kids' bikes; the choice is yours to make!

This rack is made of high-quality solid steel. Bringing further comfort is the fact that it is easy to assemble. You just need to follow the simple instructions that come with the package, and your garage space will be more organized in seconds.

But hey, don’t let us confine you to garage use! This rack is used for both indoor and outdoor purposes.

  • Comes with an extra rack with hooks for other sports accessories
  • High quality steel construction
  • More of an organizer than a security system

6 BIKEHAND Bicycle Floor Type Parking Rack Stand

The Bikehand bicycle floor rack is small but stylish. If you are one for looks, then you will love how elegantly yet discreetly designed this rack is.

Designed to fit just about any bike (over 20 inches and 2.4” in width), this bike is super stable on the ground.

Its best feature is an all-new spring-loaded push design that requires no lifting. How does it work? Well, unlike most floor stands which require you to either lift your bike up onto a suspended stand or over the lip of the floor stand, Bikehand’s front stand is tilted so that you just have to slide your bike onto its parking slot. Once in place, the stand then tilts against the wheel and locks it in place.

The ease of use makes this rack stand out from other floor racks. It means that kids don’t have to struggle with securing their bikes, no matter how heavy!

Another unique feature about the Bikehand rack is that it holds the bike wheel in three separate mounting points, automatically making it more secure in comparison to almost every other floor rack we have come across.

When it sits on the rack, the tilted front makes the wheel’s placement a bit deeper than that of other racks. This means more support for the bike, making it super stable.

Additionally, the clamping points are only in contact with the tires of your bike; removing the probability of damage or interfering with disc brakes, spokes, or frames

Lastly, it can be folded up, making it easy to store it out of the way when there is no need for its use!

.

  • Spring-loaded push design
  • Tire-only contact
  • Offers great stability for supported bikes
  • Compact storage
  • Not Modular

7 ONETWOFIT Bike Racks 2-Bike Floor Stand

The next rescue to your garage space is the OneTwoFit bike rack which is designed to meet all the needs that a bike owner would have.

Like the PLKOW storage rack, this 2 bike floor stand purposes to keep bikes organized by facing either one direction or different directions.

Most bike owners will find it convenient to use as it can hold just about any bike size. The window of use is a maximum tire size of 26 inches (excluding ones with disc brakes) and a tire width of 2.5 inches.

To secure the bikes, it cradles the front, lower, and sides of the bikes’ tires firmly in place. The 3 points of contact give stability by keeping the bike from falling off to the side.

Additionally, the heavy-duty tubular steel construction of the stand’s frame assures you of years of servitude and exclusive stability as well.

Ultimately, if you are up for the slight hassle that the stand’s assembly requires, there’s no stopping you from reaping the benefits of this rack.

  • Holds tires up to 26” bikes
  • Very secure
  • Easy Installation
  • Assembly is a bit challenging

8 Delta Cycle Shop Rack Park

Delta Cycle is a renowned brand name when it comes to innovative bike storage solutions.

And although adjustable racks aren’t as popular, there are some that have a good reputation. One such rack is the Delta Cycle Shop Rack Park.

This bike rack was designed with stability in mind. It can withstand any harsh treatment thanks to its super durable design. The stability is further enhanced with the rubber feet on the rack’s ends which keep it steady when it’s standing on its own, as you get your bike in and as you take it out.

Although designed for the storage of one bike, this rack’s strength is in the fact that its arms are adjustable, so it can be widened or shortened to fit either smaller or wider sized bikes. It is this customizable feature that makes the Delta Rack one of the best floor racks.

  • Can be adjusted to fit any tire width
  • Modular
  • Assembly is a bit hectic

Wall-mount Racks

If you are short on floor space, the next best thing is a wall rack.

The great thing about them is that they take up the least amount of floor space.

The downside? They always require wall installation, making them inappropriate for most apartment renters who don’t have the luxury of drilling holes into walls.

Additionally, if you choose this method, more than likely, you can’t stock up your walls with other items. This is because although they are very minimal on floor space, they do take up a significant amount of wall space (equivalent to the length of the bike).

Wall racks are categorized into vertical and horizontal wall racks, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, which we shall review further below.

Rack Max No. of Bikes Max. Tire Width Smallest wheel size Weight limit Rack Weight
1. Steadyrack Bike Rack 1 2.1" 20" 77 lbs. 6.5 pounds
2. RaxGo Garage Bike Rack 6 5" Universal 300 lbs.
3. Dirza Bike Rack Garage Wall Mount 1 2.5" 16" 65 lbs. 1.25 pounds
4. Koova Wall mount Bike rack 6 3" 12" 200 lbs. plus capacity
5.     Wallmaster Bike Rack 2 3" 16" 50 lbs. 2.35 pounds
6. Delta Cycle Leonardo Da Vinci Single Bike Storage Rack 1 2.5" 12" 40 lbs. 1 pound

1 Steady Rack Bike Rack

The Steadyrack Bike rack is packed with outstanding features.

It is available in Classic, Fat, fender, and mountain options.

To start with, the Classic rack (which reviewed) features two arms that hold your bike’s front wheel in position and a small clip onto which the rear wheel sits to keep it from swinging. In addition, because only the tires come into contact with the wall, you can be sure that bike frames or carbon wheels won’t be susceptible to damage.

Secondly, we like that it is easy to get a bike onto and out of the rack. You can drive the tire of your bike up the wall and then into the mount. When the front wheel meets the cradle of the rack, it is then clamped vertically on the wall.

The ingenious factor that makes this rack stand out is that its wheel trays can be twisted about 180°, and in turn, allow you to stack multiple bikes next to each other. This feature allows you to maximize the space available for bike storage.

Equally convenient is the fact that the rack’s arms can also fold up such that the rack stays out of the way when not in use.

The only downside is that its installation is a bit more involving in comparison to other racks as you have to drill 4 to 6 holes into your walls. However, this makes them more suitable for homeowners as opposed to renters.

  • Unique pivoting design eases the mounting process
  • The rack can be swung to accommodate more bikes
  • Rack’s arms can be folded for less intrusion
  • Accommodates 20 – 29” tires
  • Requires drilling into walls
  • More expensive than most

2 RaxGo Garage Wall-mounted Bike Rack

Taking us to another whole new level is the RaxGo garage bike rack.

The rack is equipped with six adjustable hooks that hold up to 6 bikes with a maximum combined weight of 300 pounds. This frees a considerable percentage of garage space compared to having the bikes lying around on the garage floors!

And the genius of it is that it organizes them in a way that takes so little floor and wall space.

The adjustability factor accounts for the rack’s ability to hold different types of bike sizes, shapes, and functions, be they adult or kids’ bikes, road or mountain bikes.

The featured cradles are also made of non-slip rubber, which ensures the hold of the bike is firm and that there is no damage from chipping and scratching to the bikes’ parts.

The RaxGo bike rack also boasts a combination of rock-solid steel construction and a coated finish, which keep it as good as new even after extended periods of use.

Above all, both novices and pros will have an easy time assembling this, and in no time, they can stack their bikes.

Our only reservation is that storing the 6 bikes as advertised gives such a tight squeeze! Unless, of course, there’s a mash-up of kids and adult bikes. 4 adult bikes, in our opinion, is a more comfortable and organized fit.

Nonetheless, for space-saving of multiple bikes, this rack is a great option.

  • Fully adjustable arm supports
  • Anti-scratch hooks
  • Compatible with different bike sizes and shapes
  • Hard to store 6 adult bikes

3 Dirza Bike Rack Garage Wall Mount

Another simply made but highly-efficient storage solution is the Dirza garage wall mount.

With thick steel construction, it is adequately prepared to support one bike of any size and shape. This is with the exception of fat tires over 2.5 inches in width.

To prevent any scratches to the rims, the rack’s hook is rubber coated; and to prevent the rack itself from rusting and/ or chipping, it has a powder-coated finish.

You can be assured of maximum security as the hook is designed to prevent any accidental slippage.

All the congruent features highlighted above show why the Dirza wall bike mount is one of the most minimalistic ways to free up your garage space.

  • The hook is rubber coated
  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Limited to bike tires of 2.5 inches in width

4 Koova Wall mount Bike rack

The Koova brand is synonymous with premium storage products, so it goes without saying that our expectations are high when it comes to the functionality of any of their products.

What we love about the Koova Wall mount bike rack is the ability to combine flexibility and function successfully. This is undoubtedly one of the versatile 6-bike racks you will come across!

The innovative package consists of 2 individual racks, each of which holds 3 bikes, bringing the total capacity to 6 (preferably kids’) bikes. Now, the great thing about the Koova is that you can install the racks right next to each other, slightly spaced from each other or even on separate walls.

The total rack length of the two racks next to each other is 64 inches, so the placement depends on your decision.

Thanks to a better design, it can hold most bikes compared to the Dirza rack mentioned above, as it has a tire width limit of 3-inches, while the Dirza rack can only store bikes with tire widths of up to 2.5 inches.

Sweetening the deal even further is that it comes with four bonus accessory hooks onto which you can further organize your space by attaching bike helmets, gloves, and so much more!

Not to mention, the Koova is made of heavy-duty powder-coated steel, which accounts for its strength.

This US-made rack also comes with a lifetime warranty, showing just how confident the manufacturer is in its product!

  • Holds up to 6 bikes with a 3’ width limit
  • The versatility of 2 individual racks
  • It comes with bonus accessory hooks
  • US-made
  • Hard to store 6 adult bikes

5 Wallmaster Garage Wall-mount Bike Rack

Another company that specializes in constructing fully-functioning storage tools and hardware is Wallmaster.

The installation of the rack is so easy and straightforward. Just an electric drill is needed, and you’ll be good to go.

Before we even go far, the Wallmaster bike rack did satisfy all our expectations as not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it is also packed with valuable features to make the best out of your garage space.

This bike rack can hold 2 bikes with a 50 pounds weight limit, to be exact. But the distinguishing factor from other racks in the market today is that the experience and expertise of the company have enabled it to have a heavier load capacity. This is owing to significantly stronger and more durable steel construction.

Like the aforementioned racks, its hooks are rubber-covered to protect your bikes. What’s more, they can fit a wide variety of bike types. From road bikes to mountain bikes, BMX, or kids’ bikes.

Another plus is that the rack itself has such a small footprint that its appearance almost goes unnoticed.

So, all in all, this simple rack is an effective solution for clustered spaces

.

  • Easy to install
  • Hooks are rubber-covered
  • Strong and durable steel construction
  • Mounting and dismounting bikes takes a bit of effort

6 Delta Cycle Leonardo Da Vinci Single Bike Storage Rack

Based on the name alone, you can tell that the Leonardo Da Vinci bike storage rack from Delta Cycle is one elegantly designed storage tool.

It boasts of a silver finish that makes the rack a hidden piece of statement in any room. In fact, when the bike is off the rack, one might just confuse it for a piece of art.

But away from that, the Leonardo is designed to fit one bike vertically. In addition, the package comes with installation hardware and printed instructions to make the installation process simpler for you.

Once assembled, the elegant design, coupled with the small size of the Da Vinci rack, makes it a proper fit for space-limited apartments.

As for functionality, the Leonardo cradles the front wheel of your bike with its rubber-coated arm. This secures the bike in place while ensuring that your whip remains scuff-free and does not suffer damage that would otherwise occur from a metal arm.

Another helpful feature is that the rack holds any bike size as long as it is within the 40-pound weight limit.

Our only complaint is that the 2.5-inches tire width rating that the manufacturer claims doesn’t apply to most of its owners. 2 inches is a more befitting specialization, in our opinion.

That notwithstanding, if you are going for a bit of panache in your space, this storage rack from the over 20-years old company will not disappoint you.

  • Elegantly stylish design
  • Relatively easy to assemble
  • Rubber coated arm
  • Fits many bike-sizes
  • Only stores one bike
  • Few complaints that the hooks hold a maximum tire width of 2” instead of 2.5” as the manufacturer states

Horizontal wall mount racks

Horizontal bike storage solutions are also attached to the wall, but they are especially effective for spaces where the floor room is tight or where bike owners want to display their bikes as art.

They secure the bike flat against the wall, which means that the room space they take is very minimal. However, bikes can take up a lot of wall space because they are pretty lengthy by nature which translates to a limited number of bikes that can be stored this way.

This method is thus commonly used by city-dwellers who don’t have the luxury of garage space. One only needs to pay mind to the length of the handlebars as they consider their horizontal wall mount options.

Pros and Cons of Horizontal Wall Mount Bike Racks

  • Easy to lift the bike up and down in comparison to vertical storage
  • It can be used as room décor
  • Some allow storage of the smallest bikes- balance bikes
  • Strongly built
  • Limits the number of bikes that can be stored
  • Not suitable for smaller kids' bikes as most limits fit larger kids’ bikes (24” and sometimes 20”)
  • Some are difficult for kids to mount and lower bikes on their own

Here is a list of some of the best horizontal wall mounts we have come across.

Rack Dimensions Max No. of Bikes Weight Limit Rack Weight
1. Vibrelli Bike Wall mount

6.00 x 11.80 x 7.90

1 55 lbs. 3.9 lbs.
2. Delta Cycle Pablo Monet folding bike wall mount rack 12” x 14.5” x 20” 2 65 lbs. 1 lb.
3. Hiplok AIRLOK Secure Bicycle Storage Hanger 17.75 x 17 x 8.5 1 None 1 lb.
4. Ibera Wall Hanger (Budget-Friendly) 15.78 x 9.75 x 7.8 1 40 lbs. 2.3 lbs.
5.Rubbermaid FastTrack Horizontal Bike Rack 2.56 x 10.5 x 14.25 1 50 lbs. 1lb.

1 Vibrelli Bike Wall Mount Rack

The Vibrelli Bike wall mount is all about strength.

This wall mount is built to last with a welded steel design, making it much stronger than most bike racks; it can hold a maximum weight of 55 pounds.

Adding to its convenience, the Vibrelli is fully adjustable. It can fit handlebars of up to 31.5 inches in width, which means that it can accommodate a wide range of bike frames.

This is because the arms of the rack are flexible so that they can mold around the bike’s frames. With the use of a simple push-button, the rack can be adjusted in accordance with the frame of the bike you want to store.

To protect your wall from scratches, it comes with a wheel stabilizing strip, which basically prevents the front wheel from swinging and bumping into the wall.

Right of the bag, every cyclist will appreciate that it is easy to install.

The ideal mounting surface is any wooden studs, concrete, masonry, or brick. The manufacturer even emphasizes that it shouldn’t be installed directly on drywall or plasterboard surfaces without supporting studs.

That said, there is very little we would change about the Vibrelli bike wall mount.

  • Accommodates a wider range of bike handlebars
  • Sturdy welded steel design
  • It comes with a wheel stabilizer for the front wheel
  • Simple to set up and takedown
  • If not careful when installing, it could be troublesome

2 Delta Cycle Pablo Monet Bike wall mount rack

The Delta Cycle Pablo Monet bike wall mount is your best bet for bike storage if you want to get rid of bikes lying idly and eating up precious space in your house.

Still dedicated to premium products after more than 20 years in the industry, the Pablo Monet is no different in terms of quality.

It is designed to accommodate up to 2 bikes of any variety – road, mountain, hybrid-- with a weight limit of 65 pounds. This makes it an excellent choice for kid’s bikes which are sure to lie within the recommended weight limit.

This wall mount rack is the epitome of Delta Cycle’s innovativeness. It is designed to fold down when not in use which means that not only does it get to stay out of the way and protect people from accidentally running into it, but it is also able to maintain a stealthy laid-back appearance that does not take away from the beauty of other items in the room it is stored in.

It ranks high in terms of durability owing to a solid powder-coated steel finish. Moreover, the rack’s arms are made of rubber to protect the bike’s finish.

As if that isn’t enough value out of this wall mount, it is also equipped with a shelf feature that conveniently allows storage of helmets, bike locks, and other accessories.

Ultimately, one thing’s for sure; the Pablo Monet is an excellent addition to the unparalleled collection of Delta cycle’s unique bike storage systems.

  • Innovatively designed to fold onto the wall when not in use
  • The shelf feature allows storage of cycling accessories
  • Rubber arms protect the bike’s finish
  • Easy to install
  • Not as sturdy as others in this category

3 Hiplok AIRLOK Secure Bicycle Storage Hanger

Available in white, grey, and red options, many home dwellers and apartment renters appreciate Airlok from a UK-based Company, Hiplok, as a stylish home security solution.

The company seamlessly interlaces art and function.

Rather than being as unsightly as most bike racks usually are, the Hiplok is very easy on the eye. This feature makes it fit alongside other items in the room with ease rather than being an eye-sore.

As for function, the Airlok’s frame is made of hardened steel A-. To install it, one mounts the steel inner core to any solid wall of choice and then covers it with an impact-resistant plastic cover which, in our opinion, easily blends in with wall décor.

The rack is strong enough to take just about any bike type.

Unfortunately, while it holds the bike firmly in place, the strong metal means that the Hiplok Airlok works best when bolted directly on solid walls.

If the Airlok’s Sold Secure Gold rating is anything to go by, this bike storage system is all about security. It further features a patented built-in lock mechanism through which the bike’s top tube is secured onto the wall mount.

The locking mechanism is secured via a coded key, making it extra secure and extra hard, even more, the most patient thief.

Still banking on security, the hook’s rubberized material secures the bike’s frame from damage. Although pricier than most, it is clear why this is a top-rated bike storage solution.

  • One of the most secure wall mounts
  • Stylishly designed
  • Minimal effort and expertise to install
  • Works best on solid walls
  • More expensive than most

4 Ibera Horizontal Bicycle Bike Wall Hanger (Budget-Friendly)

If the Hiplok is too pricey an option for you, then you can easily go for the more affordable yet highly functional alternative; the Ibera wall hanger.

The Ibera gives trouble-free storage. In fact, one distinctive feature about it is that when partnered with stud supports, it can work well on drywall.

The handiest feature about the Ibera wall hanger is that it features adjustable levers which can be modified to fit any bike’s frame. So no matter how unique your bike is, the Ibera can be articulated to fit in.

Not only do the two rotating arms adjust to hold different handlebar widths, but the rack arms also easily lock in the chosen configuration.

It’s not just about the fit, though! Because the Ibera is made of strong aluminum material, it holds the bike such that there is no chance of it collapsing under the weight and resulting in unanticipated damage.

This rack can supports bikes with a weight limit of up to 40lbs.

Moreover, the wall hanger’s main beam (which features telescoping tubes) is adjustable, meaning that you can easily adjust the rack’s distance from the wall (from 8.5” to 12”). This feature alone makes the Ibera an excellent option for small spaces.

Lastly, it also comes with a Velcro strap which keeps the bike’s front wheel from bumping into the wall and leaving it with marks.

  • Drywall compatible
  • Rack arms allow height and width adjustment to fit almost any bike’s frames
  • You can easily change how far the rack sticks out from the wall
  • Highly affordable
  • Best for lighter bikes only

5 Rubbermaid FastTrack Horizontal Bike Rack

Storing your bike where it is easily accessible yet organized enough so you won’t trip over it is quite the conundrum. Typically, this is why the storage solution offered by the Rubbermaid FastTrack horizontal bike rack is much appreciated.

To install, the rack snaps into the Rubbermaid Fasttrack mounting rails (sold separately). However, you can also mount it directly onto the wall.

This bike rack gives you all the safety your bike needs during idle hours. This is thanks to a locking gripper which reinforces the security level when attaching the hook to the rail.

With a powder-coated steel make, you are assured of the rack’s durability and strength to support the 50 pounds bike weight limit.

The strength, security, and ease of use of the Rubbermaid Fasttrack is why we rate it as one of the best ways to reclaim your space.

Thus far, it is easy to assume that horizontal wall mounts are the only bike storage solutions that allow you to hang your bike parallel to a wall such that your bike is always on display, right?

Well, there’s another category that does the same.

Freestanding Bike Storage Solutions

To put it simply, freestanding solutions are the equivalent of wall-hanging storage solutions, except they come with their stand to offer the support that a wall would offer. As a result, they are an appropriate substitute for people who have already occupied walls, don’t want to damage their walls or have walls that are hard to attach hardware to.

They are also great for renters who don’t really have the luxury of changing the specifics of their rentals.

Also known as bike storage columns, the great thing about this type of bike storage is that it allows you to stack your bikes, and they are also height-adjustable.

The term ‘gravity stand’ is usually used to describe them because, indeed, this platform uses gravity to support the two bikes. The working mechanism is that the weight of the bike(s) creates a stable downward force for the rack, which allows it to support the bikes when horizontally placed.

Another advantage to them is that they can easily relocate from one room to the other as one need only move the stand.

Conversely, the limit to this type of bike storage is that it requires walls where the column can fit between the floor and the ceiling. This makes them an inappropriate choice for rooms with very high ceilings.

Additionally, kids may struggle to add the second bike to a 2-bike storage column on their own.

With that in mind, if you are not comfortable drilling holes into your walls as some storage solutions require of you, then freestanding bike stands are the ideal solution for you.

Pros and Cons of Freestanding Bike Racks

  • Requires no wall installation
  • Allows stacking of up to 2 bikes
  • Can be moved from room to room
  • Best for apartment renters
  • Very low maintenance
  • Limited to areas with low ceilings
  • Limits the number of bikes one can store
  • Raising bikes may be hard for kids

Here’s a list of the best freestanding solutions in the bike accessory market today.

Rack Max No. of Bikes Weight Limit Rack Weight
1. Delta Michelangelo Two Bike Gravity Stand 4 100 lbs. 12.6 lbs.
2. CyclingDeal 2-4 Bike Bicycle Vertical Hanger Parking Rack 2 132 lbs. 19.6 lbs.
3. RaxGo Bike Storage Rack 2 90 lbs. N/A
4. Bikehand Indoor 2 Bike Bicycle Vertical Gravity Hanger 2 90 lbs. 13.95 lbs.
5. Topeak Dual-Touch Bike Stand 2-4 80-160 lbs. 11 lbs.
6.       Feedback Sports Velo Column Bike Stand 2 80 lbs. 14.6 lbs.
7. Sparehand Q-RAK II Floor-to-Ceiling 2 80 lbs. 9 lbs.

Let's have an in-depth overview of each of the best freestanding bike racks available in the market

1 Delta Michelangelo Two Bike Gravity Stand

The Delta Michelangelo two bike gravity stand is the epitome of elegance. This freestanding bike stand oozes simplicity; nothing too fancy about it, just enough class to fit quietly within a room.

It features a horizontal layout that allows you to stack two bikes. The upward supports come with hooks that will enable you to fasten the bikes onto them

The assembly of the steel tubes is easy and very economical on time as no tools are required for assembly. All you have to do is to slide the rack next to the wall you intend to store your bikes next to and load it up with the bikes.

Although designed to lean against the wall, it doesn’t come with any wall attachment. Instead, the idea is that because the rack’s legs angle out at the bottom, it can remain steady even with the weight of two bikes.

Another plus is that the supporting arms easily adjust to accommodate bikes with sloping top tubes or complex full-suspension frames.

We also love the featured heavy-duty rubber bumpers, which allow both your bike and the wall next to the rack to stay scratch-free.

Furthermore, it comes with a couple of extra hooks so you can attach your helmet or other bike accessories you own.

The 4-bike option, which the company also avails, is perfect for a multi-cyclist home!

The only downside is that, compared to most racks we have reviewed, its make is a bit flimsier. Unfortunately, this means that it is more likely to collapse sooner than its competitors in our review while up to the task.

  • No drilling required
  • Features adjustable arms which accommodate different bike types
  • Anti-scratch rubber bumpers
  • Extra hooks for bike accessory attachment
  • Flimsy make in comparison to its competitors

2 CyclingDeal 2-4 Bike Bicycle Vertical Hanger Parking Rack

For families that lack the standard floor space in a garage, the CyclingDeal bike hanger is an excellent choice for many reasons.

Firstly, this rack provides a dedicated space to store bikes safely off the floor by holding them sturdily above ground. It is made of a powder-coated steel base whose strength and firm hold prevent the bikes stored from falling in any direction.

With a maximum load capacity of 132 pounds, this rack can hold 4 bikes, placing two on each side stacked above each other.

Secondly, this rack has the advantage of being very mobile. Therefore, should you want to change storage location, you are free to do so.

Thirdly, the rack’s cradles tilt to allow it to hold bikes with sloping tubes and/ or aggressive frame geometries with ease.

Another appealing feature is that the cradle’s height is adjustable and that the distance between the two hooks can also be adjusted to fit different bike frame sizes.

With it, leaving your bike on the sidewalk for thieves to scavenge is not an option.

  • Sturdy steel construction provides stability
  • Adjustable cradle height
  • Tilted hook arms

3 RaxGo Bike Storage Rack

Another creative way to store bikes for city dwellers is with the use of the RaxGo Bike storage rack.

Its installation is simple and straightforward, requiring you only to attach the base kegs, support columns, crossbars, and arms in place. This process is complete within minutes, depending on one’s level of expertise. But one thing’s for sure; both novices and pros can complete the process as the only tool needed is either a 10mm or adjustable wrench.

The rack comfortably holds 2 adult-sized which means that the bikes will actually take up very little room space.

Additionally, you can use it in whichever location you choose- be it the garage, porch, shed, or indoors. If you decide to use it indoors, you will love that its design isn’t so loud that it takes over your entire interior-decorating scheme.

The other advantage to this bike rack is that it is very accommodative of different bike types thanks to fully adjustable supports. So be they road, BMX, mountain, or any other bike type; it can be safely carried.

The rack’s rubber cradles prevent bike paint from chipping off.

If you have bike frames that are particularly difficult to mount, you will appreciate that the height of the rack’s arm positioning can be changed and locked in position using the locking knobs.

What keeps the bikes securely in place is the heavy-duty construction of the base of the rack. The rack is further equipped with shock-resistant supports and braces, as well as adjustable feet, which provide optimal balance on whichever ground they are placed on.

  • Locking knobs
  • Rack arms allow rotation for ideal height selection
  • Super durable and stable construction
  • Very simple assembly

4 Bikehand Indoor 2 Bike Bicycle Vertical Gravity Hanger

Bikehand offers an indoor 2-bike vertical hanger that we find absolutely exceptional.

The aluminum-constructed floor stand has an innovative tripod base for ultimate stability as the 3 legs of the stand control the center of gravity in favor of the stand. Its 3 legs are further clothed with rubber holders to prevent the stand from skidding and damaging the floor with marks and scratches.

The rack holds 2 bikes with the help of cradles which can be adjusted to fit any desired bike frames. Furthermore, the cradles tilt to accommodate bikes with sloping tip tubes or aggressive geometries.

Equally adjustable is the height setting of the rack’s arms. Thanks to the quick release feature, which releases easily, adjusts within the 49” to 87.8” height selection, and then clasps the new setting firmly in place.

Like the legs of the stand, the rack’s cradles are also padded to prevent damage to the bikes.

The rack comes 90% assembled, making installation easy. Not only does the setup require no power tools, but the stand itself is also quite good-looking, thanks to a beautiful mat silver finish.

  • Powder-coated heavy-duty steel construction
  • Firm tripod stand base
  • Easily adjustable
  • Comes 90% assembled
  • Not advisable for two heavy bikes. Best use with one lighter bike on top

5 Topeak Dual-Touch Bike Stand

Topeak’s dual stand can fit easily in rooms with ceilings up to 10 feet, six inches.

It is made of anodized aluminum tubing with rubber feet, which allow it to be pressure set between the two contact points: the floor and the ceiling.

A clamp situated at its top end and a foot stepper on its bottom end ensures a secure fit for the stand.

It accommodates up to two bikes, which, as we have observed, is the standard for most horizontal bike racks. However, what is exciting about the Topeak stand is that it can add mounts to store two more bikes. The mounts come at an extra cost, and each can hold up to 40 pounds.

Another really cool feature is that the large knobs at the rear of the rack allow you to slide the mounts up and down and even angle them up to 30 degrees to fit bikes with sloping up tubes.

It can also fit both adult and kids’ bikes

Topeak also features a one-up bike holder for those seeking an aesthetically pleasing yet mechanically effective way to store one bike. The Dual stand is thus an upgrade to the one-up options.

The only downside is that it is pretty pricey, but hey, premium product, premium price, right?

  • Easy to set-up
  • Features two bike mounts with room to add two more
  • It can be adjusted to fit flat and sloping top tubes
  • Expensive than most

6 Feedback Sports Velo Column Bike Stand

If you don’t have any free wall space, the Feedback Sports Velo Column bike stand is a great choice because it requires no drilling.

With a large base for support, the rack’s stand is super steady. Wedged between floors and ceiling in any room you desire to store it in, and rearrange its position should you choose to switch up the furniture placement in your house

Like the aforementioned freestanding racks, its support arms can also be adjusted to allow it to accommodate different kinds of bike frames.

This column comfortably supports two bikes, frees up space in your room, and is designed to fit most bike frames; very little can be changed to make it a better performer.

  • Solid construction
  • Adjustable arms for different bike frames
  • Stores 2 bikes
  • Not any so far

7 Sparehand Q-RAK II Floor-to-Ceiling Freestanding Adjustable Bike Rack

Another freestanding dual bike storage system on our list is the Q-RAK II by Sparehand Systems.

If there is anything that this stand boasts of, it is high-quality workmanship.

The system’s supporting poles extend up to 10 feet between the floor and the ceiling. We will warn that the stand looks like it is prone to bowing from the tension at its highest height setting.

Apart from the supporting poles, it comprises two bike hangers that accurately support 2 bikes with a maximum weight capacity of 80 pounds.

The bike style is not affected as the rack can hold just about any frame style with a top tube. The only exception is the frames without a top tube which require an adapter (QSP-610 frame adapter; sold separately).

The selection of the desired height of the bike setup is also very customizable as the hangers can be adjusted.

Common to most freestanding bike stands, the assembly is tool-free; and that is the case for this Bikehand stand.

  • High-quality design
  • Tool-free assembly and installation
  • Adjustable arms can accommodate different bike frames
  • Not very sturdy at its highest height selection

Ceiling Bike Storage Solutions

Last but not least in our bike storage categories is ceiling bike storage solutions.

Also known as overhead storage, this system stores bikes on the ceiling.

Although often overlooked, ceiling storage is an option that you can use for places with no floor space or wall space to accommodate your bike.  The only sacrifice you have to make is the easy access that you can get from floor storage.

Pulley systems work to ease mounting and retrieval of bikes as they lift the bikes onto the platforms and lower them down when need be.

Unfortunately, even with this in mind, it still often means that kids need adults to help the process. Plus, in comparison to other storage solutions, their installation is usually more tedious.

Pros and Cons of Ceiling Bike Storage Solutions

  • Great for the tightest rooms with no wall or floor space to spare
  • Easy to store and retrieve bikes
  • Requires ceiling installation (somewhat more challenging than other bike storage installations)
  • Kids may need help operating

Let’s have a look at some of the best options in the market.

Rack Max No. of Bikes Weight Limit Rack Weight
1. Racor Vertical Pulley System 1 50 lbs.
2. Saris Ceiling Rack 4 - 6 50 lbs.
3. RAD Sportz Bicycle Hoist 2 100 lbs. 4 lbs.
4. Wallmaster Bike Ceiling Mount Lift Hoist Hanger 2 100 lbs.

Let's now have an in-depth review of each of the ceiling bike racks

1 Racor Vertical Pulley System

The Racor Bike Lift Pulley System is a great option for families with a list of bikes and a small budget to work with.

If you are keen on looks, you will love the quality and finish of it.

The installation is a bit more demanding than other bike-storage solutions, but that has no effect on its performance. With the two pulley sets in place, this machine is as ready as it can ever be!

As expected, bike suspension is easy thanks to the pulley system, so strength is not an issue. To pull it up, simply attach one of the hooks to the bike’s handlebars and the other to the seat and then hoist the bike up with the use of the cable.

We will warn that while this process seems automatic, it isn’t advised for small kids.

That aside, you can store different size bikes as long as the adjustment is made, so the rack matches the length of the bike’s wheelbase. Usually, the adjustment can be made to fit bikes within the 12” to 29” bike size with a weight limit of up to 50 pounds.

Because it stores the bikes upside down, it is not suitable for bikes with hydraulic disc brakes. It’s a great choice for higher-end bikes.

Safety is a high consideration (and it should be considering the bike is on your ceiling), which is why you will appreciate that the Racor system incorporates a locking mechanism to prevent accidental release of the bike.

Ultimately, this is one of the best ways to get rid of bike clutter.

  • Affordably priced
  • Can be configured to fit any bike size
  • It takes a bit of effort to install

2 Saris CycleGlide 4-Bike Ceiling Mount Storage Rack

The Saris Ceiling Rack may not be the cheapest option, but it is by far one of the best ways to get your bike out of your sight during idle hours.

Right of the bat, you will notice that this rack’s standout feature is that it stores up to 4 bikes, which is three steps higher from the regular single bike storage that is common to ceiling racks. Even better, with the add-on kit, this rack can store up to 6 bikes!

The clever design of the Saris rack is very impressive. Its sliding rails and hooks allow you to store any size of bike. In addition, sliding the hooks along the rails makes it easy to then change the rack’s configurations to fit the wheelbase of the bike you want to store.

And guess what! You can do this storing and retrieval all while your car is parked underneath! Convenient much?

With such a high rate of flexibility in terms of the number and size of bikes stored, what’s to stop a family with a bike collection from getting this rack?

  • Allows hanging of multiple bikes
  • Incredibly easy to use
  • Very space-efficient
  • More expensive than most

3 RAD Sportz Bicycle Hoist

Another site you will enjoy having in your garage ceiling is the 2007 RAD Sportz bicycle hoist.

This is an innovative design, to say the least.

To start with, it is designed in such a way that you can hang your bike both vertically or horizontally, as you please. This feature alone sets it apart from most hoists in the market today, as it allows the user to make the most convenient choice.

Additionally, with the ability to configure the spacing between the two hooks, the hoist can fit and haul bikes of different sizes and shapes.

Made of sleekly designed heavy-duty gauge aluminum, this bike hoist is both strong and rust-resistant.

Speaking of hoisting, this unit features sturdily designed ropes, so it won’t show signs of wear and tear within months of use.

The pulley system works smoothly, making the bike lifting process effortless even for young riders.

The rack has a weight limit of up to 100 pounds which means that even the heaviest kids’ bikes can be stored with ease.

Its hooks are rubber-padded to protect the bike from scratches, and once the bike is in place off the ground, the most important feature comes into play.

This rack features a locking mechanism uniquely designed to counter the accidental release of the bike each time you haul it upwards.

Suppose you want a bike storage solution that doesn’t infringe on personal space in the room. In that case, this is an ideal bike storage hoist based on its user-friendliness, innovative design, and overall great quality.

  • The new design allows both vertical and horizontal bike storage
  • Easy leverage
  • A highly secure locking mechanism
  • Adjustable hook spacing
  • The set-up process is time-consuming

4 Wallmaster Bike Ceiling Mount Lift Hoist Hanger

Wallmaster specializes in storage tools for the garage and utility rooms, so it comes as no surprise that their ceiling mount is top-notch.

The Wallmaster ceiling hanger is a very cost-effective system where there’s no floor or wall space available, and you want to keep your bike completely out of the way.

With it, it is easy to hoist the bike up and take it off as well, as the pulley system does the majority of the work for you.

What we found impressive is that it has a weight limit of 100 pounds. This shows that, indeed, the hanger is sturdily designed to support even the heaviest of bikes.

We’ve tested many bike storage solutions and found the Wallmaster’s locking mechanism very secure. The system protects against any accidental release.

This bike lift works with a highly durable rope, which lifts the bike and stores it vertically.

And as expected, for superior protection to your bike, its hooks are rubber coated, which is why this hoist has a much-coveted spot in our list of indoor storage solutions.

  • Its sturdy build supports heavy bikes
  • Weight limit of 100 pounds
  • Safely designed to prevent accidental release
  • Anti-scratch rubber hooks
  • Not any at the moment

All these solutions allow for better use of indoor space; now, let’s look at the best outdoor solutions we have come across.

When in storage, ensure that you constantly check the tire pressure. Also, do the same when planning to ride; our guide on the best PSI for kids' bikes can be handy for the little ones in storage. You can also get the best bike locks for further security enhancement when your bikes are under storage.

Outdoor storage solutions - Bike Shed and Bike Covers

If you want to store your kid’s bike without a garage, you can make a DIY bike shed or purchase one. A bike shed is a better outdoor bike storage idea for families with a patio or a yard but no garage or has limited spaces in their garages. One thing we must make clear, though, that ready-made sheds are never that attractive. Also, it would help if you chose wisely depending on the places you live – consider the weather elements and security of the shed and the bikes in it.

Another way to secure your bike is with the use of bike covers. These options work great to protect your bikes from the elements and simultaneously protect them from theft.

Here is a list of some of the best options.
